![]() ![]() Engel's letter dealt with the issue of what the state is under capitalism and the incorrect notions held of its role after the socialist revolution. The two works dealt with different aspects of the state and it is only by misinterpreting these works that any so-called incompatibility arises. First, as opposed to those who maintained that Marx and Engels had different views on the nature of the state, i.e., that the Letter to Bebel and the Critique of the Gotha Program are incompatible, Lenin says that they were actually in complete agreement on the state. Lenin makes some very interesting comments in this section- relevant to our understanding of socialism and the transition from capitalism in the twenty-first century. Although Marx wrote it in 1875, it was not published until 1891, eight years after his death. The Gotha Program was the founding document of the SPD in 1875. Lenin opens by telling us that Marx’s major discussion of the withering way of the state is to be found in his Critique of the Gotha Program.
